10. Salt and Light
January 4, 2026 - Matthew 5:13-16Salt and Light
At the very beginning of His public ministry, Jesus began to instruct his disciples in what it meant to follow Him and live as citizens of His kingdom. This section about being salt and light shows the life of a disciple is first about a new identity in Christ and only secondarily about certain activities a disciple should engage in. “You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world.” A new identity, with new power from the Holy Spirit and new character qualities (see, for example, the beatitudes) will produce new and significant ministry in the world. Like salt, Christians should protect and preserve people and enhance the “flavor” of the places we go. Like light, disciples should help people see the truth about God, themselves and the world. Are you salty in a good way? Are you giving light to those around you, “so they see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven”?
