1. LIFE – Genesis 1:1-2:9 – January 6, 2019

The Bible begins by presenting three convictions from creation – 1) Your life is not yours; 2) your life has value and; 3) your life has purpose. In Genesis 2:7 God breathes life into the first man. In the same way, God breathes His Spirit into each person who comes to Jesus in faith. For true, abundant, eternal life is found in Christ alone!

2. Curse – Genesis 3 – January 13, 2019

Genesis 2-3 should strengthen our faith in the Lord. God always keeps His Word. He promised to punish sin, and He did. He promised to provide a Savior, and He did. So we can trust Him completely for our lives right now and for all of eternity!

3. Salvation – Genesis 6-9 – January 20, 2019

Salvation – the account of Noah and the flood is one of the most famous Bible stories and also one of the most sobering. Consider what happened to people outside the ark and the difference for those inside the ark. Jesus is the true ark of salvation – are you in or out?

4. Judgment – Genesis 11:1-9 – January 27, 2019

Judgment – Genesis 11 presents the founding of the city of Babel (later called Babylon) – the city of man. God’s response seems extreme until you understand the rebellion and idolatry beneath the building of that tower. What towers are you building in your self-reliance, self-focus and desire for self-exaltation? How can you turn from that idolatry to the worship of the one true God?

5. Promise – Genesis 12:1-4; 15:1-6; 22:15-18 – February 3, 2019

Promise – God made a covenant with Abraham – promising to be with him as his God. Genesis 12-22 shows us the pathway of faith Abraham followed from repentance to commitment to obedience to prayer and patience. We also see the rewards of faith – most remarkably in Genesis 15:6 “Abraham believed God and it was counted to him as righteousness.” This is the ultimate fulfillment of the blessing God promised to Abraham – the righteousness that comes from faith in Jesus.

6. Blood – Exodus 12:1-13 – February 8, 2019

One of the great symbols of salvation is the purity and sacrifice of a spotless lamb. Exodus 12 shows us the first observance of the Passover as God delivered His people from Egypt through ten powerful plagues, culminating in the death of every firstborn who was not marked by the blood of a lamb. Jesus’ blood not only identifies us as God’s children, it protects us from His wrath, purifies us from the power of sin and satisfies us with the fullness of His grace. Jesus is the true Passover Lamb!

7. Law – Exodus 20 – February 17, 2019

God’s Law, as outlined in the Ten Commandments, cannot remove sin but it does reveal 1) God’s character; 2) our sinfulness and 3) our need for a Savior. Everyone will experience God’s Law as either a condemnation hanging over them or a firm foundation underneath them.

8. Atonement – Exodus 32 – February 24, 2019

Atonement is the Biblical word for fixing a problem in the relationship between God and people. For atonement to be made there are three requirements: 1) sin must be acknowledged; 2) a price must be paid and; 3) a mediator must intercede. Exodus 32 tells the vivid story of how Moses tried to make atonement for the grievous idolatry of the people in the story of the golden calf. This points ahead to our need for a better high priest as revealed in Hebrews 2 and 9.

9. Priest – Leviticus 16 – March 3, 2019

Priest – the book of Leviticus contains painstaking detail about how to approach the holy God of heaven. The center of this book includes instructions for The Day of Atonement, on which the High Priest offered sacrifices to cover his own sins and those of the people. In order to come before God, we must come represented by a perfect priest (not alone, on our own terms), we must come covered by a sufficient sacrifice (not unprepared and exposed), and we must come fully devoted (not apathetic) presenting all we are to the Lord as a living sacrifice (Rom. 12:1).

Courage – In Joshua 1 the nation of Israel is approaching the Jordan River and preparing to enter the land long ago promised to Abraham. They were in that same spot around 40 years before, but that generation chose fear instead of faith and turned back for Egypt. This time Joshua and Caleb (the two faithful spies from Numbers 13-14) lead the people into the promised land, resisting the lies of fear and applying the promises of God – His unstoppable plan, His irresistible power and His glorious presence!
