17. Love Your Enemies

This week we complete the sixth and final “But I say to you,” as Jesus completes His section on righteousness and calls His followers to “be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect” (v. 48). Though God’s people are to be different from the non-believers around us, we are not to hate our enemies but to love them. How can we possibly obey this command from the Lord? Only as He empowers us by His Spirit! Only as we remember how God loved us when we were His enemies! We will see three ways to love our enemies as God has loved us: 1) pray for them; 2) share freely with them and 3) imitate God as the giver of all grace and every good gift.
