2. Poor in Spirit

The beatitudes are the famous and beautiful introduction to Jesus’ sermon on the mount. Nine characteristics of a citizen of His kingdom, these are not commandments to obey in order to earn citizenship, they are descriptions of things that are already (and increasingly becoming) true for every follower of Jesus. The first one, that opens the door to all the others is, “Blessed are the poor in spirit.” Come be encouraged by the two promises: blessing and the kingdom of heaven. And come be inspired by what it means to be poor in spirit, as an internal posture of the heart.
