28. The Law of Love

Jesus made it clear that he did not come “to abolish the Law and the Prophets but to fulfill them” (Matt. 5:17-18). In our passage this weekend we will hear what it means to “fulfill the Law and the Prophets.” In all probability, you have heard this verse and even know it by heart since it is referred to as the Golden Rule: “So in everything, do to others as you would have them do to you” (Matt. 7:11, NIV). What’s even more remarkable is the phrase that comes right after: “for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” The fulfillment of everything God taught in the Old Testament is one word: love. Of course, Jesus showed us what true love looks like and calls us as His followers to copy His example (see John 13 and Philippians 2). What does it look like for you to love your neighbor right now?
