36. Kingdoms in Conflict

When Paul arrived in Ephesus the local merchants rightly perceived that the message he preached was a threat to their business of selling idols. Devotion to Artemis was ingrained in their culture for centuries – their businesses and livelihoods centered on it and depended on it. Acts 19 shows us three layers of idolatry – first in our practices; beneath that in our values; and deep down in our beliefs. As we study idolatry in Ephesus we will be challenged to reflect on the idols we trust in and serve today.
