18. The Grace of Giving

As we enter the middle of the sermon on the mount we build on the command to be perfect (5:48) and shift into the “practice” of righteousness (6:1). Jesus outlines several disciplines (clearly not an exhaustive list) that his followers are expected to practice and grow in, not to impress people but to please our Father in heaven “who will reward you.” “When you give (6:2)… when you pray (6:5)… forgive others (6:14)… when you fast (6:16)… lay up treasure in heaven (6:20)… seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness (6:33).” It’s not if you feel like it, it’s when you practice these habits be sure you do them the Jesus way, not the religious way or the selfish / human way. Following the path outlined in the beatitudes, we continue on the road to blessing in the Lord!
